Gael Clichy believes Fernandinho and Jesus Navas showed on their debuts how they could take Manchester City to the next level.
The Brazilian midfielder and the Spanish winger started and starred in City’s 4-0 win over Newcastle on Monday.
Fernandinho, who cost £30 million from Shakhtar Donetsk, and Navas, a
£14.9 million recruit from Sevilla, are two of City’s four summer
signings, along with strikers Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, who
came off the bench and had a goal disallowed.
And left-back Clichy was impressed with the newcomers, saying:
"Fernandinho’s Brazilian but he's been in Europe for eight years. He
played for Shakhtar which is a great team, they play great football.
He's a good player.
"Of course you need time to adjust but the better you are the quicker
you will settle into the team. From the first day in training he showed
us that he was ready. I'm pleased for him and pleased for us.
"Negredo should have had a goal, Navas is fantastic. We had a great
team last year and the new signings are going to bring some more and
hopefully we can keep going."
Clichy feels City showed the style of football that new manager Manuel Pellegrini wants to play.
He added: "When you play for a team like City you always want the
three points. His idea is to play attractive football, to score goals
and create chances. It was a great performance from the strikers to the
defenders and we cannot ask for more. But at the end of the day the most
important thing is three points."
