The authorities of the Kanu Heart Foundation have said that they have successfully sponsored surgical operations for 460 indigent patients since the organisation was founded 13 years ago.
The coordinator of the foundation, Mr. Abia Onyebuchi, disclosed this on Wednesday in Lagos at a press briefing.
He said the beneficiaries were children ranging from one to 12 years old.
Onyebuchi further said that children above the age of 12, whose parents could pay in part, were given a discount for the operation.
Lamenting the rot in the nation’s health care delivery system, Onyebuchi said, “We have got to a stage where the Federal Government should declare a state of emergency in the sector.
“The way and manner these innocent children get heart-related diseases are becoming alarming. As of yesterday, we had about 40 cases relating to this and, so far, we have spent several millions of naira on these sick children,” he said.
He also recalled that the organisation had spent about N6m on sponsoring the beneficiaries to various overseas countries such as India, Israel, and the United States for heart surgeries.
Onyebuchi regretted that the foundation had not been able to reach its target of N5bn to build an ultra-modern heart hospital in Nigeria, a situation he attributed to the “insincerity of politicians” who had failed to redeem the pledges made to the foundation.
He added, “In order to boost the current N349m cash at hand, we have decided to introduce lottery ticket in the selection of would-be beneficiaries; but we are awaiting the permission of the Nigerian Lottery Commission.”
