Andy Murray rose from his hospital bed on Tuesday, after undergoing minor surgery. Now it is time for British tennis to leave the sick bay, too.The Lawn Tennis Association has unveiled a new chief executive in the shape of Michael Downey, a 56-year-old Canadian. After Murray’s historic success at Wimbledon, there will never be a better time to change the fortunes of this unloved organisation.

The recruitment process had run on for so long that, like everything else the LTA do, it was increasingly being seen as a stuff-up. Yet David Gregson, who led the appointment panel, was clearly delighted with the end result. “Michael is the perfect choice,” said Gregson, the LTA chairman, on Tuesday. “He has run Tennis Canada with true distinction.”
Gregson also went public with the financial details of the deal, revealing that Downey’s starting salary would be £300,000, with the possibility of further bonus payments that could reach £90,000 per annum. This represents a significant saving on the £394,000, plus bonus payments and pension contributions of £246,000, that Roger Draper received last year, to the outrage of many of the LTA’s critics.
Though Draper leaves at the end of the month with a tarnished image, he also has some positives to point to. Apart from winning two grand slam titles, Murray has just carried Great Britain into the World Group of the Davis Cup for the first time since 2008.
Laura Robson, now ranked well inside the top 50, is becoming an increasingly feared opponent. Yet the lack of depth, particularly on the men’s side, remains an embarrassment.                                               .............. THE TELEGRAPH
