Shelby Buster, 14, was shopping for an
outfit for her birthday at rue21 in
Eugene, Oregon when a store employee
told her she was "too big" to shop at
the retailer.
"I walked in and the lady at the front
counter said, 'Hey you're too big to be in
this store, I need you to leave,'" Shelby
said.
Shelby was with a friend and the time of
the incident and had to wait until she
finished shopping to leave the store and
tell her mother what had happened.
"So she checked out and we walked
back," she explained. "My mom came
back to talk to them and they were like,
'Oh, we're so sorry!'"
When contacted by the press, the rue21
district manager said they are aware of
the situation and are currently looking
into it.
In the meantime Shelby's mom had both
Shelby and her friend write a recount of
what happened to document the incident.
"This made no sense to me," Shelby said.
"They should just have more respect, just
to refrain from insulting people like me
and stuff."
Though the manager reportedly said that
rue21 does not tolerate discrimination,
neither Shelby nor her mother have been
contacted by the store since the incident
