Michael’s blog was written a few days ago and despite the death of his father on Sunday evening he has decided to publish it.
Hello Everyone.
I hope you are all well and are enjoying the start of the football season in England and other parts of the world.
It is definitely what I expected it to be in that there have been one
or two surprises but the usual suspects are already starting to show
signs of fighting it out at the top. The top three clubs from last
season – Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea – will without
doubt be at the top come the end of the season.
From a Chelsea perspective we have had a strong start (apart from the
Super Cup loss) and long may it continue but that’s all it is – a
strong start. We are not getting carried away and know that we have to
keep working hard as a team to achieve our aim of winning trophies.
We are all disappointed with the Super Cup loss, especially as we
came so close and just got pipped at the last minute with their
equaliser, but that’s football for you and we have to take it on the
chin and move on from it.
I know my good friend Lukaku was very down after missing his kick but
I have lots of respect for him and I told him that. He was brave to
stand up and be counted and unfortunately it didn’t work out this time.
The key is playing as a team and staying together as one unit with a
hardworking ethic and I have no doubt we will deliver some trophies for
you.
I am looking forward to a few things this season. Obviously the whole
team is looking forward to working hard and playing for Chelsea as well
as winning trophies, but with all the hard work there has to be some
humour. That is important too so here are the three key things I am
looking forward to.
First of all I can’t wait for Chelsea v Crystal Palace (both home and
away) – not only for the football but for the press conferences of both
managers. In my view the two funniest press conference managers – Jose
Mourinho v Ian Holloway.
Apart from taking their respective games and team performances
seriously, they bring a lighter side to football. Whenever I listen to
them, they make me laugh so much and they show that football needs and
has a sense of humour.
They are two brilliant coaches who have achieved so much for their
various teams and know how to entertain on and off the pitch. I hope
they both appear on the same stage and delight us all with their sense
of humour. Comic relief should get them to do a piece to raise funds for
charity if possible.
The second thing I am looking forward to this season is meeting
Southampton FC. I played against their current coach Mauricio Pochettino
a few times in France. He was at PSG when I played for Bastia and I
wonder if he remembers me. I was young and he was midway through his
career. When he joined Southampton, I was in Madrid so haven’t had the
chance to meet him yet.
It makes me feel like a veteran watching some of the people I played
against now in management – how time flies and how well they have done
for themselves.
But that’s football for you and I have to say he hasn’t changed much from what I remember from all those years ago.
Finally I am looking forward to joining the Ghana national team –
Black Stars – for the next phase of the World Cup qualifiers. As you all
know I decided to take a break from national team duties due to the
injuries I had at the time.
I feel I am over that now and I am in a position to combine national
team duties with club duties now. When I stopped playing for the
national team, I was still trying to get my fitness back and couldn’t
see myself playing for Chelsea and Ghana, but that’s all behind me and
hopefully I will be selected to represent my country again.
Well there is a lot to look forward to but at the end of it all, I
expect us to lift a few trophies on the way to make the 2013/14 season a
memorable one.
