police officer was killed and another one was seriously injured in an early morning robbery incident at a micro finance bank on Tuesday along Deco Road, Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Daily Independent gathered that the gunmen, numbering about four, were heavily armed and at about 9am laid an ambush for officials of the micro finance bank on their way from a new generation bank to cash some money.
Witnesses, who did not want their names in print, told Daily Independent that the two police officers, who were attached to the said micro finance bank, attempted to foil the robbery attack and rescue the officials when the robbers opened fire on them.
A police source at the B’ Division Estate of the Nigeria Police Force gave the name of the dead police officer as Aliyu Musa while the name of the injured officer could not be ascertained as at press time.
The source stated further that about N8 millionwas carted away by the gunmen who were masked.It was alleged that an insider at the new generation bank that was aware of the transaction orchestrated the attack.
Another police source told our correspondent that the police were investigating the incident, adding that some suspects have already been arrested for questioning.The police source stated further that the late Musa, a middle aged man, hailed from Kano State and that the corpse had since been deposited at a morgue in Warri.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in-charge of Warri B’ Division could not be reached for comment.When contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Lucky Oyabeme, confirmed the story, adding that police were investigating the incident and that the dead police officer was escorting the bank officials from the bank where they had gone to collect money.
