The Nigerian Air Force and the Shell Petroleum Development Company have agreed to carry out joint periodic surveillance of the company’s critical oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta. The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu, said the Air Force had the capacity to carry out periodic aerial surveillance of SPDC pipelines in order to detect oil pipeline vandalism in the region.Amosu said the Air Force had committed some of its platforms to give aerial cover to oil pipelines because the Niger Delta was important to the service. The Air Force Chief spoke while receiving the Managing Director of the SPDC, Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu, represented by the company’s General Manager, Security, Mr Francis Agas, in Abuja, onTuesday. He said the NAF’s involvement in the ongoing military operation in the north eastern part of the country would not prevent it from rendering periodic aerial surveillance along the pipelines inthe Niger Delta. He stated also that the Air Force had been involved in detecting vessels involved in illegal bunkering even without alerting the oil companies in advance because they knew what to look out for.He said, “The situation in the Niger Delta is very important to us; as a matter of fact we have dedicated platforms to give us cover, but you know we cannot come in without invitation.”
