Jurgen Klopp's men had gone into the game knowing that anything less than a win would spell the end of their interest in this season's tournament but they took an early lead courtesy of a contentious penalty from Marco Reus.
Jakub Blaszczykowski doubled the hosts' advantage and although Lorenzo Insigne set up a tense finish, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed a crucial win for Dortmund that moved them above Napoli and into second place in Group F, three points behind Arsenal.
