One of the most influential men in European football suggested this week that two of world football's greatest rivals should join forces in order to strengthen their flagging fortunes.

Super-agent Mino Raiola believes that AC Milan and Inter would be better served by merging, leading to divided discussion over the subject in the Lombardy city.

"If Milan and Inter want to be able to compete with the very best again, they should consider a merger," Raiola told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"They were the richest clubs in the world at some stage, but are now struggling to do anything without their rich owners. [Milan CEO Adriano] Galliani complains to me about the Arabians, but he forgets they have been acting like the rich Arabians for 20 years with Berlusconi.

"The arrival of some rich Chinese will not help them forward either. The fans will continue to see two 'half' teams. But if both teams were to merge, you would have one club with a turnover of €320 million rather than two clubs with a turnover of €160m."

But what if such a model was successful, and was replicated in some of Europe's biggest divided football cities?
